The Yankees could miss out on Eugenio Suarez because he is in demand in the National League

With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the New York Yankees are still looking for offensive reinforcements to bolster their lineup for the stretch run. One of the names that has been mentioned in recent weeks is Venezuelan third baseman Eugenio Suarez, currently a figure with the Arizona Diamondbacks and home run leader in the National League

However, the Yankees could be left empty-handed because National League teams such as the Cincinnati Reds, his former team, have begun active talks with Arizona to seek a trade. Journalist Trent Rosecrans reported that there is mutual interest between the Reds and Diamondbacks to bring the slugger back.

Eugenio Suarez is having a great year and attracting suitors from the National League

At 34 years of age, Eugenio Suarez is having an explosive season with 36 home runs and 86 RBIs, which ranks him among the most productive players in 2025. His level has attracted the interest of several teams, especially in the National League, where his power could be a decisive factor in an increasingly tight postseason race.

His former club, the Reds, would be particularly interested in bringing him back. Suarez played in Cincinnati between 2015 and 2021, leaving very solid numbers with an average of .253/.335/.475 and 189 home runs, becoming a fan favorite. The Venezuelan’s possible return would be, according to analysts, an emotional and sporting blow that would be very well received at the Great American Ball Park.

Obstacles in negotiations and the risk for the Yankees

Although talks with the Diamondbacks and Reds are real, some experts do not see it as feasible for an immediate deal to be reached. MLB journalist Mark Feinsand noted that “the Reds and Arizona have talked about Eugenio Suarez, but some sources consider it unlikely that a deal will be finalized.” Even so, he suggests that Arizona is willing to move several pieces with expiring contracts, including Suarez, Josh Naylor, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.

Meanwhile, the Yankees risk losing another key piece in their bid to shore up the infield, as the high competition from the National League could close the player’s access, especially if Arizona prefers to trade him from its own circuit to avoid a crossover with New York in a possible World Series.
