The Yankees are still breathing in the AL East, but the margin for error is minimal

In a season marked by ups and downs, the New York Yankees are clinging to a statistical miracle. Although they have shown almost automatic dominance against lesser teams, their big debt has been precisely against rivals in their own division. They are currently 17-22 against American League East teams, including a disappointing 2-8 against the Boston Red Sox and 3-7 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The most surprising thing is that despite those losses against divisional rivals, the Yankees are still alive in the fight for the East and as seen this past week, Aaron Boone’s team still shows flashes of greatness.

Yankees schedule: Path to the top or to elimination?

The road to October will not be easy for New York, after a possible sweep of the White Sox, there are crucial duels in the playoff aspirations:

  • Houston Astros – Daikin Park
  • Toronto Blue Jays – Yankee Stadium
  • Detroit Tigers – Yankee Stadium
  • Boston Red Sox – Fenway Park

This stretch of the schedule is where the Yankees’ true fate will be decided this season. If they can finally beat competitive teams, they could make up ground, but it looks difficult because it’s something they haven’t done in 2025 and if they fail, their chances would be virtually evaporated.

After these commitments, the closing offers relief because they face the Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles twice, but it all depends on getting out of the next few weeks alive.

The Yankees have shown they can destroy their weak rivals, but they have yet to prove they can beat the teams that matter. The rest of their season will be a test of character, where they must reverse months of inconsistency to regain the lead they lost in July.
