The Yankees are rumored to be acquiring a player who was one of their worst enemies

The regular season is not over yet, but the free agent market for the winter is already heating up and one of the most coveted names could be Alex Bregman, the current third baseman for the Boston Red Sox, who would be evaluating opting out of his current contract to explore new options. According to reports from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Bregman could be in line for a $175 million deal, which puts him on the radar of several contending teams.

What no one expected was that among the interested parties would be the New York Yankees and the possibility of seeing Bregman, an old acquaintance and constant antagonist of the Bronx, both in Houston and now in Boston, in pinstripes has sparked controversy among fans

What teams are interested in signing Alex Bregman?

While the Red Sox want to keep him, Bregman has two player options that would allow him to finish his current three-year, $120 million contract after this season. The two-time World Series champion could take advantage of his solid performance to land a new mega-deal. Teams such as the Phillies, Tigers and the Yankees themselves would be ready to enter the bidding.

So far in 2025, Breman is hitting .281 with 16 home runs, 54 RBIs and a .364 OBP in 359 at-bats. At 31 years old, he is not only productive, but he also seems to be in an ideal position to negotiate the contract he did not get last winter.

Can an “enemy” become an idol in the Bronx?

MLB history is full of epic rivalries, but also sporting betrayals that changed the course of franchises. If Bregman were to end up signing with the Yankees, it would be a coup both on and off the diamond because he would be strengthening a key position and weakening one of their biggest historical rivals.

The question is whether fans could forgive him. Bregman was part of the Astros that eliminated the Yankees in multiple seasons and now plays for the Red Sox, the eternal enemy. However, if he comes to New York and produces, fans’ memories could be short, especially if he helps lift a new World Series trophy.
