After an Opening Day to forget against the Mets, Paul Skenes is back in the news, but not for his performance on the diamond but for the resurgence of the rumor that places him with the Yankees for next season.
The Bronx Bombers are hoping to complete a trade for the pitcher for next season with the help of his girlfriend, gymnast Olivia Dunne. In an unexpected move, Livvy could be the factor that triggers the negotiation.
According to a report from the New York Post, the Yankees are convinced that Skenes wants to play for them someday. The newspaper also reports that the New York organization tried to talk to the Pirates last July to put the pitcher’s signing on the table, but did not get a specific response.
Why would Livvy Dunne play an important role?
It was revealed that the athlete recently bought a $2 million apartment in Manhattan’s West Village. She has also been seen frequently visiting Babe Ruth’s old apartment.
Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that only the Yankees will attract Skenes; the Mets could also try to sign him if he really wants to settle in the Big Apple. So the Bronx teams are not only monitoring the pitcher, but also the movements of his partner, who would be the key player to negotiate with Pittsburgh and with him.
What move would the Yankees make for Skenes?
According to reports, the Yankees were willing to part with four top prospects last summer to bring Skenes to New York: Cam Schlittler, George Lombard Jr., Spencer Jones and Carlos Langrange.
Since then, Schlittler has established himself as a Yankees starter, standing out toward the end of last season in the midst of Gerrit Cole’s recovery from Tommy John surgery.
