The woman who stole Phillies home run ball has been identified… and her profession will surprise you

What should have been a heartwarming ballpark memory turned into one of the strangest stories of the Phillies‘ season when a viral clip captured a fan taking a prized home run ball from a young boy celebrating his birthday.

Days later, the woman at the center of the controversy has been identified online, and her background has only fueled the conversation.

It all unfolded during the Phillies‘ matchup against the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park on September 5. With the Phillies already ahead, Harrison Bader launched a 410-foot home run into the stands.

A father in a red shirt scooped up the souvenir and immediately handed it to his son, Lincoln, who was celebrating his birthday. The moment drew cheers from nearby fans, until it quickly unraveled.

A woman wearing a Phillies jersey approached the pair and claimed the ball was hers, pointing to the area where she believed it had landed.

In the video, which has since gone viral, she argued with the father before he reluctantly took the ball back from his son and handed it over. The woman then walked away with the souvenir, leaving the boy visibly upset as the crowd looked on.

The clip exploded across social media, with fans dubbing the woman “Phillies Karen” and overwhelmingly condemning her actions.

Sports blogs and even NFL teams chimed in, with the Philadelphia Eagles sharing photos of Bader later making it right by gifting Lincoln a signed bat. Marlins staff had also stepped in earlier, providing the young fan with a gift bag.

But the story didn’t stop there. Within hours, online users claimed to have identified the woman as Cheryl Richardson Wagner, a 67-year-old resident of Moorestown, New Jersey.

Social media users dug up what appeared to be her LinkedIn profile, which listed nearly two decades of experience in companion and social services with Bayada Nurses.

That detail, a profession centered around patience and compassion, quickly went viral on its own. Screenshots of her profile circulated widely, with many highlighting the irony of her job description against her behavior at the ballpark.

Viral infamy for ‘Phillies Karen’

The fallout has been swift and relentless. While most reactions condemned Wagner, some fans went too far by sharing what they alleged were her personal details, sparking a debate about how quickly online outrage can spiral into harassment.

Still, the overwhelming sentiment has been critical of her actions, with fans pointing out that baseball etiquette typically favors giving souvenir balls to children.

Sean Barnard of Crossing Broad summed up the mood with a pointed quip: “It is not this man’s fault that she has the hands of Nelson Agholor,” referencing the former Eagles wide receiver known for dropped passes.

Others tried to defend her, suggesting that if the ball had landed closer to her seat, she may have felt entitled to it. Yet the viral video has made it difficult for most fans to sympathize, as the image of a disappointed birthday boy contrasted sharply with her determined march away from the scene.

A happy ending for the birthday boy

Despite the controversy, Lincoln’s night ended better than it began. In addition to the gift bag and Bader‘s signed bat, his story spread across sports media, with many calling for the Phillies to invite him to a future game or even reward him with a World Series experience should the team advance that far.

For Wagner, the viral spotlight has only grown harsher. What began as a routine September game has thrust her into an unwanted spotlight, serving as a reminder of how quickly ballpark etiquette, or the lack of it, can turn an ordinary moment into a national talking point.

The Phillies got their win on the field, but for fans, the lasting memory of the night will be a young boy losing his home run ball and the internet’s tireless efforts to ensure his story was told.
