The Washington Commanders part ways with one of Dak Prescott’s best allies from the past

Michael Gallup, a former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, has officially stepped away from professional football following an unsuccessful attempt to make the Washington Commanders‘ roster.

Gallup was released Monday as part of a six-player roster reduction, marking the end of his latest effort to return to the NFL.

Gallup entered the league when the Cowboys selected him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Colorado State.

He quickly became a key target for quarterback Dak Prescott, earning a reputation for making contested catches and providing dependable production in Dallas’ passing attack.

His second season, in 2019, was a breakout year, highlighted by 1,107 receiving yards and six touchdowns, establishing him as a prominent figure in the Cowboys’ offense.

Career derailed by injuries

Despite early success, Gallup’s career trajectory was significantly affected by injuries. Following his breakout campaign, he faced multiple setbacks, culminating in a torn ACL in 2021.

Although he secured a five-year, $62.5 million contract extension in 2022, he was unable to return to peak form after the injury. These challenges led to his release from Dallas ahead of the 2024 season.

Gallup briefly signed with the Las Vegas Raiders but retired prior to the start of training camp, citing ongoing physical limitations.

This year, he attempted a comeback with the Washington Commanders, aiming to reconnect with former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, now in his second season as Washington’s head coach.

Despite his experience and familiarity with Quinn’s coaching style, Gallup was unable to secure a position on the team.

During his six seasons with Dallas, Gallup recorded 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns. Known for his precision route-running and ability to haul in contested passes, he remained a reliable offensive weapon when healthy. His performance earned him recognition among fans and respect from teammates and coaches alike.

One last chance falls short

Gallup’s tenure with the Commanders represented an opportunity to revitalize his career and contribute under a familiar coaching system. While the reunion offered potential, it did not result in a roster spot, ultimately concluding his professional playing career.

Gallup’s NFL journey underscores both his early talent and the impact injuries can have on a player’s career. Though his time in the league was shorter than anticipated, his contributions to the Cowboys’ offense during his prime remain significant.

His ability to perform under pressure and make key catches continues to be remembered by fans and analysts.

The 28-year-old wide receiver now joins a growing list of players whose careers have been affected by injuries and the difficulty of returning to professional football after time away.

While Gallup will no longer compete at the NFL level, his career serves as a reminder of the skill, perseverance, and challenges inherent in professional football.
