The truth behind Michael Jordan calling LeBron James the GOAT

LeBron James turned 41 on December 30, continuing to defy age in the NBA with historic performances.
Fans and analysts alike were quick to speculate if the legendary Michael Jordan acknowledged him as the GOAT.

While social media exploded with claims, the reality is more nuanced – as a viral post on X.com, formerly Twitter, suggested Jordan had publicly called LeBron the greatest of all time, sparking debates across platforms.

Basketball Hustlers shared a post in which Jordan, the legendary Chicago Bulls player, supposedly wrote: “Happy Birthday GOAT @KingJames.”

To which LeBron is shown replying, “The GOAT recognizes GOAT. Thank you, the real GOAT @MJofficial.”

The post included a collage of LeBron and Jordan from the 2022 All-Star Game with fake tweets implying Jordan congratulated LeBron as the GOAT. This spread quickly but was entirely false.

Jordan does not have an official X account, and even claims of a secret social media presence were proven to be hoaxes.

Despite the misinformation, the story reignited the longstanding GOAT conversation between the two iconic hoopers.

For LeBron, attention now turns to a meeting with the Detroit Pistons on January 30 as he continues to excel in his 22nd season as a pro, posting averages of 20.5 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.9 rebounds for the Los Angeles Lakers.

NBA GOAT Debate: Jordan vs LeBron – How do the professionals see it?

The Jordan vs. LeBron debate has captivated fans for years as Jordan, a six-time NBA champion and five-time MVP, is celebrated for clutch performances and scoring titles in a relentless manner.

His Air Jordan brand and influence in pop culture also add weight to his legendary status as he expanded beyond his sport to encompass a global cultural impact – although LeBron has mirrored this through other avenues than sneakers.

James is praised for longevity, versatility, and consistency across multiple teams and eras and, with four championships and four MVP awards, his influence extends beyond scoring to leadership, rebounding, passing, and mentoring younger players.

His ability to sustain elite performance over 20+ seasons is unmatched, and both command significant respect from professionals as a 2025 survey of 133 current NBA players showed a narrow margin: 45.9% chose Jordan, 42.1% LeBron, and 9.8% Kobe Bryant.

By contrast, a 2020 ESPN fan poll had 65% favoring Jordan and 14% for LeBron, showing the difference between fan and player perspectives – hinting at a more nostalgic element compared to those who know what it takes to play the game professionally.

Both athletes have reshaped the game in unique ways. Jordan revolutionized global basketball marketing, while LeBron has influenced player empowerment and social activism. The debate also touches on era, rules, and team context, ensuring endless discussion among fans and analysts alike.
