Atragedy has united two rival baseball teams, the death of the youngest son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, did not go unnoticed by the Mets.Miller Gardner died in his sleep on Friday morning, according to a statement released Sunday by the former player and his wife Jessica and published by the Yankees.

After the painful loss, the couple says they “have so many questions and very few answers at this time.”

“Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot comprehend our lives without his infectious smile,” the statement read. “He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and friends. He lived life to the fullest every day.”

The Yankees said the organization was “heartbroken”.

“The words seem insignificant and insufficient to try to describe such an unimaginable loss,” the team said in its statement. “Not only did Brett grow up in this organization for more than 17 years, but so did his wife, Jessica, and their two sons, Hunter and Miller.”

Condolences from the Mets

Carlos Mendoza, Mets manager and Gardner’s former teammate, did not hesitate to express his condolences for the unfortunate death of Miller, his friend’s son.

“I want to start by sending my condolences to Jessica and Brett Gardner on the loss of their son,” the Venezuelan said at the start of Sunday’s press conference, according to Essentially Sports

Mendoza was really affected during his meeting with the press, as his children were close to Gardner’s children. “I also have two children, they were very close,” he exclaimed.

Essentially Sports details that Mendoza and his wife, Francis, have two children, who were very close to Gardner’s children, having a close relationship between the two families.

Mendoza and Gardner played together between 2006 and 2007 in the Yankees minor league system.

In addition, the Mets captain was also one of Gardner’s coaches during his last four seasons with the Yankees (2018-2021).
