Cody Bellinger’s free agency has set off alarm bells in the Bronx. After a solid season with the New York Yankees, the outfielder decided to decline his $25 million player option to explore the market.
Although the Yankees want to keep him, there are at least three franchises that could offer him a more attractive contract and steal one of their offensive and defensive pillars.
Kansas City Royals, an ambitious bet
The Royals fell short in their bid to return to the playoffs in 2025, but they have a promising young core and are looking to bolster their outfield with an impact player. Bellinger fits the bill with his elite defense, postseason experience and left-handed bat, and his arrival would allow Jac Caglianone to move into the designated hitter role.
New York Mets, the most painful blow
A change of scenery in New York would be a direct blow to the heart of the Yankees, but it is not a far-fetched idea; the Mets already surprised by signing Juan Soto in 2024 and could repeat the move with Bellinger, who would reinforce a weak position such as left field and provide power, defense and continuity in a lineup that is looking to compete again.
Houston Astros, experience for a new era
The Astros face a rebuild after a disappointing season and multiple injuries, including to Yordan Alvarez. With the need to shore up the outfield and add consistency, Bellinger is an ideal option thanks to his durability – he has played at least 130 games in the last four seasons – and his ability to impact both sides of the game.
A market that is heating up
Bellinger’s decision to test free agency reflects his confidence in securing a more lucrative multi-year deal, and while the Yankees remain in the hunt, teams with salary cap space and clear needs such as the Royals, Mets and Astros could step in and leave New York with a huge void in left field.
