The terrible damage to Onyeka Okongwu’s teeth after receiving a brutal elbow from Jaylen Brown

You can’t accuse Atlanta Hawks forward Onyeka Okongwu of not being tough after he suffered a significant facial injury during Wednesday’s matchup against the Boston Celtics, which left fans, teammates, and coaches concerned for his immediate well-being.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter when Celtics guard Jaylen Brown attempted to split a double-team involving Okongwu and Hawks guard Dyson Daniels. In the process, Brown‘s elbow struck Okongwu directly in the mouth, causing what appeared to be a serious dental injury.

Following the game, Okongwu shared a photo on his Instagram Story showing a bloodied mouth and several front teeth that were knocked out of alignment. The graphic image showed the severity of the blow, drawing attention across social media and raising questions about his condition.

Despite the painful incident, Okongwu showed remarkable composure. After briefly heading to the bench, he returned to the court to take two free throws, successfully converting one, and helping Atlanta maintain a 107-92 lead over Boston.

Brown was assessed a flagrant 1 offensive foul for the contact. Speaking after the game, he emphasized that the elbow was unintentional and expressed sympathy for Okongwu‘s situation.

“Just being aggressive like I always am,” Brown said. “Just a basketball play. It’s unfortunate. Okongwu is a good player. I know from my own experiences with a fractured face and chipped teeth that s*** is a hassle. It wasn’t intentional, and I know it’s going to be a long day at the dentist tomorrow, so hopefully he has a good recovery.”

Hawks coach on Okongwu’s injury

Hawks head coach Quin Snyder acknowledged the severity of the injury while highlighting Okongwu‘s toughness.

“He took quite a shot. It’s a good thing that dentistry as a profession is – I don’t know exactly what he’s going to need, but he’s pretty banged up,” Snyder said. “I told him he’s still handsome, but it’s a good thing that people can repair his teeth, because he’s going to need some work.”

Okongwu‘s resilience has been a defining feature of his season. The young forward has missed only two games so far, demonstrating both consistency and commitment.

While it remains unclear whether he will need to miss additional games for dental treatment, his decision to continue playing immediately after the injury shows it takes a lot for him to come off the court.

Fans and analysts will now closely monitor updates regarding Okongwu‘s condition and potential recovery timeline. Meanwhile, Atlanta celebrates a hard-fought victory over a tough Celtics team.

Okongwu‘s perseverance, even in the face of a painful setback, shows that plenty of toughness is needed to compete at the highest level.
