It is no secret that the term ‘WAG’ has begun to be used massively to point out those women who have a formal romantic relationship with players of some sport, at least in the United States.
Its use is normal, but “it has a negative connotation”
The term in question is an acronym for the phrase “Wifes and Girlfriends” and was coined at some point in the media to establish a role for those women who date players or stars of the NFL, MLB, MLS or even NHL, so its use is almost normal.
However, Allison Kuch, a social media figure and now wife of former NFL player Isaac Rochell, put her finger on the pulse during her Sunday Sports Club podcast, as she believes that using that term to refer to Taylor Swift, the current partner of Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, is disrespectful, as she says, it is generally applied in a derogatory manner.
Kylie Kelce did the same on a podcast
This emerged after Alex Cooper interviewed Kylie Kelce, Travis’ sister-in-law, on Call Her Daddy, where she said that she doesn’t like the term ‘WAG’ either: “I don’t like it because I think it has a serious negative connotation (…) I think it’s that suggestion that your spouse’s profession also sucks you in,” said Jason Kelce’s wife.
This is how Kuch defended her point: “No wife or girlfriend in the NFL community refers to herself as a WAG. It’s always the people on the outside who refer to the insiders as WAG, and I find it very funny, because you think of someone who is bourgeois or conceited. I’ve never met someone who calls herself WAG,” Kuch said.
