The current NFL champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, defeated the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in an impressive fashion to secure the second Super Bowl in franchise history, winning 40-22 – and most notably, sacking Mahomes six times and intercepting him twice.
It may seem like a coincidence, but the team’s general manager, Howie Roseman, has been surgical in his decisions and has delivered two Super Bowl titles to the Eagles. He nearly had a third, which was lost two years ago to the same Chiefs. However, his work-especially in the Draft-has been the key to the Eagles’ success.
Of course, in free agency, he brought in a star like Saquon Barkley and also acquired wide receiver A.J. Brown, but the foundation of this team comes from the Draft, which speaks volumes about Roseman’s great work.
Roseman’s Draft picks
“The Eagles only win because they have a super team” is a phrase that has been repeated often, but that’s an attempt to diminish Roseman’s meticulous work. This team was built through the Draft-not through massive contracts-a visionary approach.
Roseman bet on Jalen Hurts in 2020 with a second-round pick (53rd overall), at a time when Carson Wentz was still the starting quarterback. Today, Hurts-once overlooked-has played in two Super Bowls and won one.
He also made a trade to move up to the 10th pick in the 2021 Draft to select DeVonta Smith, a receiver who had won the Heisman Trophy with Alabama and has become a true star with the Eagles. Tight end Dallas Goedert is also a standout and was a second-round pick in the 2018 Draft.
One of his greatest picks is defensive lineman Jalen Carter. Coming out of Georgia, Carter was Roseman’s first pick in 2023. Despite concerns at the time about his off-field conduct, the GM evaluated the risk, made the call, and Carter is now an NFL standout projected to become the highest-paid defensive lineman in the league.
Then there’s Cooper DeJean, a second-round pick in the most recent Draft, who intercepted Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl and returned the ball for a touchdown.
Philadelphia’s success will continue – they are the reigning champions, a very young team, and currently the favorites to return to the Super Bowl from the NFC, all thanks to the work of Howie Roseman.
