Following the controversial remarks made by Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham regarding the new WNBA expansion cities-Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030-it was now Sabrina Ionescu’s turn to weigh in. The New York Liberty star didn’t disappoint.

Her answer was nothing short of spectacular, offering a textbook example of how to respond to delicate topics. Diplomacy must always prevail to avoid offending or alienating others, something that Cunningham failed to consider in her earlier comments.

The powerful response from Liberty veterans

With warmth and empathy, the veteran Liberty guard delivered a remarkable response when asked about the league’s expansion plans.

I’m super excited, just so excited for this league being able to continue to provide new franchises in different states and cities,”… “I’ve never been to Detroit or Philadelphia, and that’s something I’m really excited about, is to be able to go there and in a few years and just see how big basketball is and how we can continue to bring in new fans.

Reactions quickly poured in following Ionescu’s graceful response, especially in light of Cunningham’s prior statements. The Liberty player’s tact and enthusiasm clearly resonated with fans and the public alike.

For the New York star, the expansion into new cities was seen as a promising and positive development. In stark contrast, Cunningham openly criticized the choice of locations, a stance that did not sit well with the public.

You want to listen to your players, too. Like where do they want to play? … I don’t know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or [Cleveland].

Cunningham said.

It seems that some players forget the importance of empathy when reacting to decisions that may impact how people feel about their hometowns or cities. As public figures, athletes must be mindful of what they say-and even more of what they do. Whether they like it or not, they are part of a public sphere that constantly scrutinizes their actions and holds them accountable.

Ionescu, by contrast, displayed exactly the kind of tone and attitude expected of someone in her position: gracious, enthusiastic, and inclusive. Her words not only strengthened her public image but also demonstrated a deeper understanding of the significance that the league’s growth has for communities across the country.

In the ever-expanding spotlight of women’s professional sports, how players respond to league milestones can either elevate or tarnish their standing. Sabrina Ionescu chose the high road-and it showed.
