The new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer, believes he has found the right weapon to motivate his players ahead of the upcoming NFL season. And they’ll certainly need it if they hope to compete in the NFC East-currently one of the toughest divisions in the league, featuring the reigning champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, and a Washington Commanders team that surprised everyone last year.
There’s a popular saying that goes something like this: “Surround yourself with people who inspire you.” And it seems that’s precisely what the Cowboys’ on-field leader is doing.
Schottenheimer is now bringing former Cowboys players to interact with the current roster and serve as mentors. He hopes this initiative will serve as a powerful source of motivation for the team and help them rack up consistent wins throughout the season.
Compete every day
Since taking over, Schottenheimer has been instilling a winning philosophy in the Cowboys’ locker room-one that emphasizes daily competition and a relentless pursuit of perfection. While that spirit is being cultivated on the practice fields for now, the goal is to maintain it throughout the regular season, with the aim not just to compete, but to win.
Legends Day at The Star
This event is far more than just a friendly meet-and-greet between current players and the legends who once made the Cowboys one of the NFL’s marquee franchises. Schottenheimer’s goal is for his players to receive valuable mentorship from former greats whose experiences can help them prepare for future challenges.
There’s a great tradition and history here with the Cowboys, and we’re not just talking about Super Bowl trophies, but also some of the greatest players,” Schottenheimer said. “We wanted them to see our energy and our dynamism-how we operate. These guys paved the way for the ones holding these positions today.
He also added:
They’re part of our family. It’s like having an uncle or grandfather, in some cases, who offers you advice. They become mentors. Will they be friends? I hope so! But even if not, you can still learn from the experiences of people like Randy White, Bob Lilly, Michael Irvin, and Dat Nguyen.
Breaking away from past ghosts
Having gone three decades without reaching a Super Bowl weighs heavily on the Cowboys. In recent years, the team, the front office, and the fans have endured disappointment and frustration. Schottenheimer, however, sees things differently. For him, it’s not a burden-it’s fuel.
I don’t see it that way. Not when the head coach sits here and says the ultimate goal is to win a world championship. I think it’s something to celebrate,” he said. “We have an incredible organization, an incredible team, and our history defines who we are. Some might see that as pressure. I don’t. I think it’s fantastic.
Finally, Schottenheimer had this to say about the former stars who visited the team:
I think the closer those guys are, the more we see their Super Bowl rings-which they wear so proudly-I think that’s great for our guys, because that’s what we’re here for. We’re not running from it.
