The secret sauce Caleb Williams possesses will be the special ingredient for the Chicago Bears, although he won’t be asked to be Superman on every play

The 2025 NFL season is drawing ever closer. The countdown to kickoff has begun, bringing with it many new stories-some expected to be truly surprising. One of the most anticipated narratives centers around the Chicago Bears’ quarterback, Caleb Williams.

In a conversation on the Up & Adams program, the Bears’ new head coach, Ben Johnson, discussed what he expects from his starting quarterback as the season begins.

The show’s host asked Johnson about Williams’ ability to move the ball, to which the head coach responded:

Yeah, we have conversations about that all the time. Just playing with a little bit more discipline and structure within the system to distribute to the playmakers that we have on the perimeter. But at the same time, what has made him such a special player over the course of his career in college and in the pros so far has been that ability to create.

And so I think he had one opportunity the other night, and we weren’t able to connect on it. But I told him that’s the secret sauce. We’re not gonna ask him to be Superman all the time, but when those times present, that’s where he needs to come through for us.

A promising preseason for Caleb Williams

Positive signs for the Bears have emerged during the preseason, largely due to Williams’ performances, which suggest a promising start to the year. From what has been observed so far, the team appears capable of being a serious contender within their division.

Williams made his first appearance in this stage, and, as expected, looked solid in the 38-0 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Although he spent limited time on the field, Caleb impressed with six completions on ten attempts, totaling 107 yards and one touchdown. This performance earned him a quarterback rating of 103.6.

After the game, in which the Bears overwhelmed the Bills’ backups, head coach Ben Johnson spoke to reporters about his quarterback’s performance:

He’s really been locked in. Anytime you’re a young player, there’s usually a couple of steps forward and one step back. And that’s really been the story of this training camp. He and I have been really open and honest about it as we’ve gone through. And he’s had some really good practices, and he’s had a couple where it’s not good enough.

The Bears‘ final preseason game will be against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, August 22. In this matchup, the team seems poised to finalize details and fine-tune their approach to ensure they are fully prepared for the 2025 season opener on September 8 against the Minnesota Vikings. This game will serve as a key measure of Caleb Williams’ true potential with the Bears. Facing a divisional rival, a victory here would provide significant momentum for the team moving forward.
