The Boston Red Sox took a step forward in the American League East with the acquisition of Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros to strengthen their offense. Now, many experts predict that they will have a better season than their eternal rivals, the New York Yankees, who are an injury-riddled mess ahead of Opening Day 2025.
With the playoffs on the horizon, Boston is looking to continue to strengthen its roster to be competitive in all areas and is looking to make one last move ahead of the start of the season, precisely from the Yankees.
According to several sources, Boston is in talks with former Yankees player Dominic Smith, who recently rescinded his contract in the Bronx after not being offered a spot on the roster.
Smith already had a brief stint with Boston and made a good impression, hitting six home runs, so several people in the organization are looking to bring him back. From Boston, Smith was sent to the Cincinnati Reds and now, the Yankees had sent him to the minor leagues in January.
In AAA, Smith had a good run, but failed to convince the Yankees to keep him on the team, as they chose Ben Rice, and Boston seems a reasonable alternative for him.
Why is Dominic Smith important to the Red Sox?
Boston may have room for someone like Smith on its 40-man roster. He could be a pinch hitter and an excellent option to shore up the defense, in such a long season, where injuries always appear, in exchange for a minimum contract.
Dominic Smith’s best season was with the New York Mets in 2023, where he hit a dozen home runs and had a good run with the team. The Yankees, on the other hand, seem to be looking for some utility player to strengthen their roster.
