Lionel Messi is chasing a unique record in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Argentine is very close to achieving it and in doing so will break a mark that is vacant in the history of the United States professional soccer league.

As always, the Argentine is in search of both collective and individual records and Lionel Messi is about to reach a historic record in MLS. The Argentine currently leads the scoring and assist charts for the 2025 season.

A record that would be unique in MLS

Lionel Messi’s 2025 MLS season has been brilliant with 26 goals and 18 assists (tied with San Diego FC’s Anders Dreyer) for Inter Miami. If he maintains this pace in the final matchday of the regular season, he could become the first footballer in MLS history to finish first in both tables.

Lionel Messi will go for the top scorer and assist provider in the same MLS season

in Inter Miami’s final regular season game on Decision Day against Nashville SC to try to claim this unprecedented record in the tournament.

If Lionel Messi were to establish it, it would change the way players are valued in MLS, which would be a turning point in the history of MLS soccer.

Those who came closest in MLS

In 2015, Italian Sebastian Giovinco scored 22 goals and provided 16 assists, finishing level at the top of the scoring charts with Columbus Crew’s Kei Kamara, but his large number of assists allowed him to win the Golden Boot with Toronto FC.

In 2019, Mexican Carlos Vela scored 34 goals (the most goals in a regular season in MLS history) and 15 assists (five short of Argentine Maxi Moralez).
