The reason why LeBron James is the true King of the NBA

LeBron James’ remarkable longevity at the highest level of the NBA continues to justify his nickname: “The King.” As he approaches the start of his 23rd season in the most prestigious basketball league in the world, James remains as motivated as ever. He is preparing for this new chapter as if it were his very first season, yet with a legacy already filled with history, magic, and unparalleled achievements.

James will tip off the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Lakers in a marquee matchup against the Golden State Warriors. His journey has been long, but rather than an uphill struggle, it has felt like a fast track toward success, bringing him championships and personal milestones that very few athletes in history can claim.

The beginning of LeBron’s journey

LeBron entered the NBA as the hometown hero for the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his early years with the Cavs, it became evident that, despite his efforts, he would not be able to reach his ultimate dream of winning a championship with the team at that time.

This realization prompted a bold move to the Miami Heat, where his ambitions became reality. Surrounded by elite teammates, James captured the elusive NBA title, cementing his place among the game’s greats.

After conquering the league in Miami, James returned to Cleveland on a mission to deliver a championship to his home city. Against all odds, he fulfilled that promise, leading the Cavaliers to glory and bringing a championship parade to a city that had waited decades for that moment.

But James’ hunger for greatness was far from satisfied. He took on a new challenge by joining the Los Angeles Lakers. Many critics assumed he was headed to California for a “golden retirement,” but they were wrong.

Arriving in 2018, James wasted no time proving his critics wrong, leading the Lakers to an NBA title by 2020. With another championship added to his resume, he continues to prove that he belongs in the conversation as the greatest active player. On Friday, a stunning statistic highlighted the vast scope of his career.

LeBron James has played with or against 36.43% of all players who have ever played in the @NBA. It’s the highest such percentage in league history. Chris Paul, who passed Vince Carter last season, is now second. Of the 5,002 players who have played in the NBA, James has been a teammate or played against 1,822.

James’ career achievements so far

  • 4 NBA championships
  • 4 Finals MVP awards
  • 4 regular season MVP titles
  • Competed in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Inducted this week into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame alongside the entire Redeem Team.

A massive challenge for the 2025 season

The NBA season tips off on October 21, and for the Lakers, it presents a crucial test. James must find chemistry with Luka Doncic, who represents both the present and future of the franchise.

If they can build on last year’s progress, the Lakers have a real chance to reach the postseason and contend for another title. A championship run would be the perfect capstone to LeBron’s legendary career, placing him firmly alongside Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as one of the three greatest players the NBA has ever seen.
