Luka Doncic electrified fans during EuroBasket 2025, where he led the tournament in scoring and reminded the basketball world why he is considered one of the most gifted players on the planet.
With that performance fresh in everyone’s mind, Doncic now heads into the NBA season with his name at the top of the early MVP conversation.
But there is an interesting wrinkle in his pursuit. According to veteran NBA reporter Mike Bresnahan, the very teammate who could help Doncic lift the Lakers into contention may also stand in his way of winning the award.
“I’m taking Luka Doncic, yeah. Which is it’s a little crazy. And he has LeBron kind of pulling people away from the MVP vote,” Bresnahan said during an appearance on Spectrum SportsNet.
Bresnahan pointed to the fact that James finished sixth in MVP voting last year, even though the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs and had a middling season overall.
“Considering that LeBron was what, sixth overall in MVP voting? Tough to say that last season,” he added.
“Seventh, whatever it was. I think this Luka is here. I think he has a legit shot at MVP if the Lakers finish top four in the West. Not an easy task, Ally. No doubt about it.
“But yeah, I think this is going to be a great year for him. And he’s got the cash, too. He’s got the extension, whatever that might have.
“Not that it wasn’t offered to him, but he now knows where he’s going to be for several years. That’s got to help, too.”
LeBron’s influence still matters
James‘ ability to draw MVP support even in a down year shows how difficult it might be for Doncic to completely dominate the voting.
If the Lakers enjoy a strong regular season, many voters will feel compelled to recognize James for his contributions, potentially splitting the ballots between the two teammates.
Even with that challenge, Doncic has plenty working in his favor. His brief run with the Lakers last season provided a preview of what he can bring over a full campaign.
In 28 appearances, he averaged 28.2 points per game, instantly transforming the offense and shouldering much of the scoring load. If he maintains that pace over 70 or more games, it will be hard to deny his candidacy.
