The reason the Boston Red Sox gave up on signing Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso has a happy ending after so many rumors that were handled about his departure from the Mets. His new home is in Baltimore with the Orioles, a team that was responsible for putting on the table the juiciest contract that he could not refuse. It was the offer that did not come from the Red Sox, a franchise that was also interested in him.

According to The Boston Globe, the Red Sox’s proposal was less than the $155 million and five years that Baltimore paid for the first baseman. The Boston franchise did negotiate and was willing to pay a considerable amount, albeit lower than the $130 million Alonso was seeking as a free agent.

We have to make the best decisions we can for the organization. And the players have to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. Now we have to find another way to improve our roster

Craig Breslow, director de operaciones de los Red Sox, a The Globe

The real reason behind Boston’s refusal to pay what Alonso was asking for was the age of the hitter. At 31 years of age, Pete was valued as a veteran player whose conditions would be declining in the following seasons and that possible scenario would not correspond to the investment.

Prior to accepting the Orioles’ deal, Alonso held one last negotiating meeting with the Red Sox to see if either side would budge. The organization stuck to its proposal without raising a dollar more; the player did not lower his financial demands and contract period.

Red Sox fans’ reaction to the news

Boston fans are demanding that the team make a big move to get past the 2025 wild-card round. They are begging for a luxury signing to compete for the title. The priority is a power hitter after trading Rafael Devers to the Giants earlier in the season, after he became frustrated at being moved from third base to make way for Alex Bregman.

The Red Sox’s most important move this offseason was the acquisition of veteran pitcher Sonny Gray in a trade with the Cardinals. With him, they will have a solid pitcher behind ace Garrett Crochet. In addition, he is known for his animosity towards the Yankees, something that Red Sox fans appreciate, especially because they were eliminated by the New York team last season.
