The reason Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford will not be a repeat of the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul ‘disaster’

The boxing world is buzzing after Dana White and Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh officially announced that Saul “Canelo” Álvarez will face Terence “Bud” Crawford in a blockbuster showdown on September 13 in Las Vegas.

It’s a dream matchup-two of the most dominant fighters of their generation meeting in the ring under the banner of a new boxing league.

But while fans are excited for the fight itself, the announcement that Netflix will stream the bout globally has stirred unease.

Memories are still fresh of the streaming mishaps during the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson event last year – Netflix’s first foray into boxing – which was marred by buffering issues, app crashes, and a widely criticized broadcast experience.

So, when the Canelo-Crawford fight was revealed with Netflix once again handling the stream, many fans voiced skepticism. However, those behind the event are confident the platform has learned from its mistakes.

Promoters and insiders defend Netflix’s return to boxing

Despite the backlash, neither White nor Alalshikh appears interested in changing course.

They’re standing by Netflix, arguing the platform has the global reach, production muscle, and motivation to get things right this time.

And key voices from inside the promotion, including Mike Tyson‘s son Amir J. Tyson, have been vocal in their support.

Amir, who co-hosted the Tyson-Paul broadcast, shared his optimism on Instagram: “Happy I’m apart of the Netflix team which is and always will be the best and biggest platform on earth and their endeavors. #blessedandthankful.”?

His message was posted alongside a Ring Magazine feature on Crawford‘s warning to Canelo-a subtle indication that he may be involved again in the broadcast team for the September fight.

Dana White, for his part, has downplayed any need for traditional promotion, calling the Canelo-Crawford clash a once-in-a-generation opportunity.?

“Turki Alalshikh wants to make the biggest fights that the fans want to see in boxing, and this is right up my alley,” he said.

“Are you kidding me that the first boxing fight I am going to get to promote is Canelo vs Crawford? It’s literally once in a lifetime fight.”

Though the exact Las Vegas venue is still to be confirmed, the magnitude of the bout is undeniable. Canelo, the Mexican superstar, and Crawford, the undefeated welterweight champion, have long dominated the pound-for-pound lists.

For many, this fight ranks above recent heavyweight spectacles like Usyk vs Fury in significance.

A global spotlight and second chance for Netflix

The big question now is whether Netflix can deliver a flawless viewing experience to match the stakes.

The company’s first attempt with Tyson-Paul was widely panned, but that event was as much about spectacle as sport. Canelo vs Crawford is pure boxing-an elite-level contest with historic implications.

There are clear advantages to Netflix’s involvement. Unlike traditional pay-per-view, which can cost fans $80 or more, this fight will be available to subscribers at no extra charge.

That could dramatically widen the audience and bring new fans into boxing-something the sport has long struggled to achieve.

If successful, Netflix’s involvement could mark a turning point in how boxing is consumed and broadcast.

But if streaming failures resurface, it could damage both the league’s credibility and Netflix’s ambitions in live sports.

For now, fans can only wait and hope that the streaming giant is ready.

With White, Alalshikh, and Amir Tyson backing the move, there’s confidence behind the scenes. But expectations are sky-high-and this time, there’s no room for error.
