The real reason behind the shocking delays in former Yankees son’s death investigation

The unexpected death of Miller Gardner, the teenage son of former New York YankeeBrett Gardner, has drawn attention not only to a family’s heartbreak but also to broader challenges currently facing Costa Rica’s judicial system. Gardner, 14, was found unresponsive at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort during a family vacation last week.

While initial suspicions pointed to food poisoning, authorities have now suggested that an allergic reaction to medication might be responsible. However, investigations into Miller’s passing face delays due to Costa Rica’s surge in homicides, which has overwhelmed coroners and forensic teams.

With over 900 murders reported in 2023, Costa Rica’s homicide rate climbed to a record 17.3 per 100,000 residents, an alarming statistic in a country renowned for its natural beauty and appeal to tourists. The spike in violence, attributed to gang wars over drug-trafficking territories, has strained the Judicial Investigations Police, slowing toxicology and pathology analyses for cases like Miller Gardner’s. Authorities estimate results may take up to three months to finalize.

It was a considerable safe place

Despite the rise in violent crime, tourist hotspots like Manuel Antonio National Park, where the Gardners were staying, remain relatively safe due to increased security measures. Yet, the U.S. State Department issued a “Level 2” travel advisory for Costa Rica late last year, urging visitors to exercise heightened caution, citing not just petty crime but also violent incidents including armed robberies and assaults.

Costa Rica’s homicide rate, while concerning, is still lower than that of some major U.S. cities like Chicago. However, the recent escalation in gang-related killings has put immense pressure on the country’s forensic services, leaving families like the Gardners in extended uncertainty. Brett Gardner, who retired in 2021 after a 14-year career with the Yankees, now faces unimaginable loss as investigations into his son’s death navigate systemic delays.

While Costa Rica continues to attract millions of tourists each year, its struggles with violent crime, and the ripple effects on services like coroners-underscore the country’s complex challenges as both a vacation paradise and a place grappling with mounting internal issues. For the Gardner family, the confluence of these challenges has made their tragedy all the more poignant.
