The real cause behind Caitlin Clark’s struggles: injuries and poor three-point accuracy-does it have a solution?

Caitlin Clark was heralded as the future queen of the WNBA long before setting foot in the league-a status that inevitably brings stress, pressure, and an immense sense of responsibility. Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder put it simply: “Her crown is heavy,” when referring to what Clark is currently facing in her professional journey. While Bluder is proud of her former player’s performance, she also believes that “Pressure is a luxury.”

All those qualities Bluder saw in Clark during her college years were clear signs that she was destined for greatness. And even before being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft, Clark’s talent was already opening doors across the WNBA.

The pressure from fans

Despite posting impressive numbers as a rookie, it still doesn’t seem to satisfy many fans. They constantly expect more-deep three-pointers from near half-court, a basketball IQ beyond comparison, and passes filled with flair and finesse that only Clark can deliver.

Amazingly, she manages to deliver all of that night after night. And even after exhausting games, she remains gracious, offering autographs to those who ask. But there may be something hidden beneath the surface: her mental and physical well-being.

Humility above all

Moving into her own apartment after spending several weeks living in a hotel may not seem significant, but it undoubtedly contributed to a kind of weariness many overlook. Still, she remains kind and approachable-like when she recently posed for a photo with a fan while grocery shopping. That image quickly went viral, showcasing her humility and grounded personality.

On multiple occasions, the 22-year-old has expressed her desire to be a role model for younger generations. She always tries to make herself available to the public, but has also admitted, “I wish I could be a normal 22-year-old.

I’m only 22 years old. I feel younger than that at times. I’m trying to navigate moving to a new city by myself. I’m trying to navigate playing in a new league on top of everything else that’s come with it.

Harassment, an unfortunate issue for some players

Some people fail to separate the public figure from the individual trying to live a normal life. That confusion can lead to disturbing experiences, like the one faced by Paige Bueckers, the top draft pick this year, who dealt with a stalker while at UConn.

I would just say [Clark] handles it with grace, and the pressure that she’s put on every single night to perform at the level that she does, it’s inhumane, really.

Clark’s physical strain is becoming evident. She’s already missed five games, and repeated collisions on the court are taking a toll. According to WNBA analyst Seerat Sohi:

Clark, who hadn’t gone a game without a 3-pointer since her sophomore year at Iowa… has already come up empty from beyond the arc three times this young season… Everyone has their theories. Mine? Fatigue, both physical and mental.

Now more than ever, Caitlin Clark’s mental health should be a priority. Giving her space to recharge could ensure that the spark she brings to the game shines for years to come.
