The question all Bears fans are asking: When will Caleb Williams’ time to shine arrive?

Last season, several rookie quarterbacks -or those with only a few years in the league- proved that their talent required little to no adjustment period to succeed at the professional level. For them, the transition from college football to the NFL was more mental than physical. These young stars either exploded onto the scene from their very first snap or gradually developed their skills while leaving clear signs of growth along the way.

Perhaps the most striking example of this phenomenon is Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. His arrival in the nation’s capital had an immediate impact, lifting the franchise to the NFC Championship Game, where they came close to pulling off an upset victory.

Meanwhile, Michael Penix Jr. brought a new dimension to the Atlanta Falcons offense, adding mobility and explosiveness that made the unit far more dangerous. In Denver, Bo Nix, under the guidance of head coach Sean Payton, began to show flashes that he could be the franchise quarterback the Broncos desperately needed.

Amid these promising young talents, Chicago Bears fans can’t help but ask: When will it be Caleb Williams’ turn to rise?

Few signs of progress for Caleb Williams

Expectations for Williams have been sky-high ever since Chicago selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, his performance so far has been underwhelming, with only brief glimpses of potential and no sustained excellence.

Now entering his second season, hopes remain that 2025 will be the year Williams validates his draft status and begins to transform the Bears offense. Early in their Monday Night Football opener against the Minnesota Vikings, it appeared Williams was finally taking control, poised to lead his team to a breakthrough win. But as the game wore on, everything unraveled.

Inside the franchise, there is still a belief that Williams can take the next step and become the dynamic leader they envisioned. For now, though, that dream remains unfulfilled.

A rough start for Williams

The stage was perfectly set for Williams to shine in his 2025 debut, with a national prime-time audience watching. Surrounded by offensive weapons built to maximize his skills, the young quarterback instead faltered. He struggled to command the offense, and ultimately, the entire team collapsed.

Williams missed multiple passes that should have been completions, setting off a chain reaction of negative plays. Another glaring issue was his tendency to hold onto the football too long, leading to several sacks and costly lost yardage. Head coach Ben Johnson addressed the performance afterward:

Top notch and I would put him up there with some of the best in the NFL. But overall, it needs to improve… It was up and down… We had mixed results.

Although it’s only been one week, pressure is already mounting on Williams and Johnson. If Williams cannot develop consistency and demonstrate that he has the talent to lead a franchise that has struggled at quarterback for years, questions about his future will only grow louder.

Fans, coaches, and executives alike are desperate to see him succeed. With the season still young, there is time for Williams to right the ship and deliver the victories Chicago has been waiting for.
