The play everyone is talking about in MLB: Juan Soto and an uncharacteristic action for the highest paid star

In an emotionally charged showdown like the “Subway Series” between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, an unexpected incident on the diamond sparked a wave of comments and questions in the baseball world. In the bottom of the first inning of the second game of the series, star outfielder Juan Soto, one of MLB’s purest and most valuable talents, surprised everyone by laying down a sacrifice bunt. An atypical action for a hitter of his caliber, which generated an intense debate about strategy.

With the score tied at zero, two runners on base and no outs in the bottom of the first inning, the stage was set for Soto, known for his plate discipline and ability to hit big, to drive in runs with his usual swing. However, to the surprise of fans and commentators, Soto opted for a bunt. Although the play managed to advance the runners to second and third base, the Dominican was thrown out, frustrating those who were hoping for an opportunity to capitalize on the moment with a powerful hit.

Carlos Mendoza’s reaction

The question of who ordered the play was quickly answered. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed after the game that the decision to bunt was entirely Juan Soto’s. Mendoza defended his player’s autonomy, praising his reading of the situation: “Soto made the decision to bunt there. He moves the runners. I don’t care who it is, if it’s Juan Soto or whoever. If they see the situation to put the ball in play and move the runners and have a chance to score, I give them credit for that.”

For his part, Juan Soto himself explained his reasoning: “I didn’t have the best opportunity to get a hit at that moment. The infield was in the back, the third baseman was covering the line, so I thought it was a good opportunity for the bunt. I had a good opportunity to move the runners and it worked.”

The millionaire value of Juan Soto

This incident takes on an added dimension when considering Juan Soto’s value in baseball today. Although he is not the highest-paid player in all of MLB in terms of total annual salary for 2024, his $31 million one-year contract with the Yankees firmly positions him among the salary elite in the league.

In addition, Soto is heading to free agency at the end of the season, where he is expected to sign a contract that could exceed $500 million, making him one of the highest-paid athletes in the history of the sport.
