The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring backup options in case a T.J. Watt trade becomes a reality.

T.J. Wattcontinues to be the heart of the Pittsburgh Steelers’defense, delivering dominant performances that not only anchor the squad but consistently shift the momentum in their favor. However, recent rumors have cast doubt on Watt’s future in Pittsburgh, leaving uncertainty around the long-term plans for the Steelers’ defensive cornerstone.

Speculation has grown around T.J. Watt’s future, with reports suggesting he is seeking a contract that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. As a result, the Steelers now face a tough decision: commit to their defensive cornerstone with a record-breaking deal or begin exploring other options to fill the position.

Are the Steelers searching for a new defensive cornerstone?

This has become one of the biggest questions surrounding the immediate future of the team, as they deal with the unexpected possibility of T.J. Watt’s departure. For that reason, the Pittsburgh front office is already exploring potential replacements to fill the void Watt could leave behind.

This information was confirmed by Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly, who closely covers the team’s activity. Speaking on 93.7 The Fan, Kaboly addressed the possibility of a T.J. Watt trade and whether the Steelers are actively exploring such a move.

He began by saying that although the Steelers haven’t engaged in trade talks with other teams regarding Watt, the Pittsburgh franchise has been inquiring about the status of potential players who could hypothetically fill his role.

Nevertheless, it is important to note that the same journalist previously clarified on his X account that no trade conversations have taken place. “There is no anticipation for Watt to hold out when camp starts on July 23, and there have been no inquiries made to other teams about trading him,” he posted.

T.J. Watt’s possible departure would demand a massive deal

T.J. Watt has been a vital part of the Pittsburgh Steelers since being drafted in 2017, consistently serving as a defensive standout for the Black and Gold. As the saying goes, every great story deserves a memorable ending, and perhaps, for Watt and the Steelers, that ending could be a high-profile departure.

The player’s demands are very high, as he wants to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league, surpassing the contracts of Ja’Marr Chase with the Cincinnati Bengals and Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns.

Andrew Fillipponi stated on his radio show that the contract Watt is reportedly seeking is a four-year deal worth between $128 million and $168 million guaranteed. If finalized, such a deal would make Watt one of the highest-paid defensive players in NFL history.

For now, the Pittsburgh Steelers are focused on the upcoming season, aiming for strong results and a return to the playoffs, something they did achieve last season. They will kick off their campaign at home against the New York Jets.
