The Patriots haven’t ruled out re-signing Stefon Diggs after releasing him

The door to Foxborough has not been permanently bolted shut for Stefon Diggs, despite a tumultuous exit from the franchise earlier this month.

New England Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf recently suggested that the organization is maintaining a pragmatic outlook on its roster construction as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches. During an appearance on the Up & Adams program, Wolf was asked directly about the possibility of reuniting with the four-time Pro Bowler.

“Yeah, I never like to rule anything out,” Wolf responded, indicating that the team remains reactive to the shifting landscape of the league. “There are always different scenarios that come up, whether you have an injury or a scheme shift or whatever the case may be, so I don’t want to close the door on anything.”

This willingness to revisit the past comes at a time when the Patriots are desperate to find reliable targets for young quarterback Drake Maye.

Diggs provided a significant spark during his tenure, becoming the first player in a New England uniform to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards since Julian Edelman retired.

Financial constraints and the shadow of off-field distractions

The decision to move on from Diggs was not purely a budgetary maneuver; it was also influenced by a series of high-profile personal complications that reportedly clashed with the organization’s preferred culture.

Legal issues stemming from a December 2 incident at his residence resulted in a felony charge involving allegations of strangulation or suffocation, alongside a misdemeanor assault claim. Additionally, his very public separation from Grammy-winning artist Cardi B became a focal point of media attention that the team sought to avoid.

According to reports from EssentiallySports, these distractions were a primary factor in the team’s pivot.

“Pats sources also said the Cardi B drama is ultimately what made them back away from Diggs,” Tim Wood reported. “Great player, money, and ask are ultimately not a fit, but there’s real family drama there that is not the Patriots Way.”

While the organization continues to monitor the free-agent market, they are simultaneously linked to one of the league’s most prominent trade candidates. Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown has emerged as a primary target for the Super Bowl LX runners-up.
