The past conflict that ended Bill Belichick’s chance to return to the Giants

The New York Giants’ 2025 NFL season has been disastrous, prompting speculation that Bill Belichick could return after the decision to axe Brian Daboll. But it’s a firm no from the six-time Super Bowl champion.

Fans briefly envisioned the six-time Super Bowl winner taking over to restore stability and success to the franchise but the NFL insider Gary Myers revealed the truth about Belichick’s return – and why he will remain with the UNC Tar Heels.

“I admit I thought Belichick to the Giants made some sense. But that was before I was told today it would NEVER happen,” NFL insider Gary Myers revealed. “Because Belichick had burned all bridges in the organization about 4-5 years ago, and he was absolutely not going to be a candidate.

“I look at this as a smart face-saving pre-emptive strike by Belichick before word got out that the Giants had no interest. It should help his recruiting.

“We already knew no other NFL team was interested because he went through two hiring cycles without an offer. That’s why he’s at North Carolina.”

Belichick, 73, spent the entirety of his pre-UNC career in the NFL, winning six Super Bowls with the Patriots and two more with the Giants as Parcells’ defensive coordinator. Despite his legacy, a New York return was not feasible.

Daboll was fired on November 10 with the team sitting 2-8 heading into Week 11, despite bringing through Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo to partner Malik Nabers, although the latter two have landed on the injured reserve list.

Speculation emerged that Belichick might return to the Giants to stabilize the team, but history and internal conflicts prevented any serious consideration but Belichick publicly dismissed the rumors.

“I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization,” Belichick said. “And both the Mara and Tisch families.

“The New York Giants played an important role in my life and coaching journey.”

Sources indicate that conflicts over personnel decisions and strategic philosophy created an irreparable rift as Belichick’s prior disagreements with upper management ensured that New York would not be a viable option.

Who is the New York Giants’ interim coach?

The Giants now confront the challenge of finishing the season under new leadership, tasked with stabilizing a roster that has struggled both on and off the field while maintaining almost-extinct NFL Playoffs hopes.

And following Daboll’s dismissal, the Giants appointed offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as interim head coach to oversee the team whilst front office works on the next permanent boss.

Kafka, in place since 2022, faces the challenge of steadying a fractured locker room during the final seven games of the 2025 season heading into Week 11 against the Green Bay Packers.

“Our players are pros,” Kafka said. “My job is to get them in the best position to be successful and work through the week with adjustments as we continue to prepare for Green Bay.

“Taking our time, making sure we cross our T’s, dot our I’s, putting together a great plan for the players has been my focus the last 48 hours.”
