The 2025 Open Championship is ready to make history once again, as golf‘s oldest major returns to Northern Ireland. From July 17 to July 20, Royal Portrush Golf Club will host the world’s best golfers in what is expected to be one of the most thrilling events of the season. With the Claret Jug on the line, millions of fans across the United States are preparing to follow every drive, putt, and playoff moment.

This year’s tournament marks the 153rd edition of The Open and only the third time Royal Portrush has welcomed the event. The scenic Dunluce Links last hosted the tournament in 2019, when Shane Lowry claimed a stunning victory.

In 2025, however, it’s a wide-open race. Xander Schauffele is back to defend his title, but contenders such as Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Scottie Scheffler are primed for a deep run. The stakes couldn’t be higher, especially with a record purse of $17 million on the line, including a $3.1 million payout to the champion.

Royal Portrush returns as the backdrop to golf’s most storied major

Royal Portrush’s Dunluce Links will once again challenge players with its tight fairways, swirling winds, and iconic holes like Calamity Corner. The 7,381-yard layout plays to a par of 71 and is expected to deliver drama, especially over the weekend.

The 2025 field includes a mix of seasoned veterans and exciting young talent. One name drawing headlines is Estonian amateur Richard Teder, who qualified for his first Open in dramatic fashion. “It’s surreal. I didn’t expect to be here this soon,” Teder told reporters after clinching his spot. Alongside him, fan favorites like McIlroy, Lowry, and Scheffler look to etch their names into the record books.
