The NFL clarifies its decision to honor Charlie Kirk with a moment of silence

During Thursday night’s game between the Commanders and Packers, the NFL surprised fans by requesting a moment of silence in memory of Charlie Kirk, who was murdered the day before. The scene was broadcast live on Prime Video, when host Charissa Thompson introduced a video in which the league and the Packers invited the crowd to join in a moment of reflection.

The stadium announcer read the official message: “The National Football League asks you to join us in a moment of silent reflection following the murder of Charlie Kirk. The NFL condemns all violence in our communities. It will take all of us to stop the hate. Thank you.”

NFL responds to the decision to honor Kirk

After the ceremony, Pro Football Talk (PFT) asked the league about the origin of the initiative and whether the gesture would be repeated in Week 2 games. The NFL clarified that Thursday’s decision came directly from the central office, not from the Packers, and that other games would be left to the discretion of each host team.

The league explained that moments of silence are part of a tradition activated when an event has national or international impact. In the past, the NFL has honored victims of school shootings, attacks on religious centers such as the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, and victims of natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires.

Past tributes in the NFL

The organization also recalled that it has paid tribute after international tragedies, such as the Hamas attack on Israel in 2023, and has honored sports figures including Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, who died in a helicopter crash in 2020.

More recently, the league has included the performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” in its protocol, which has become part of major events like the Kickoff Game and the Super Bowl. Additionally, in 2024, moments of silence were held to remember victims of attacks and accidents in Washington, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.

The NFL and a protocol that blends sports with social responsibility

With this latest tribute, the NFL reaffirms its stance on using its platform as a space for reflection in the face of tragedy. Although this time the decision came from the league, for the rest of the weekend it will be up to the local teams to decide whether to replicate the gesture.

In a setting where football reaches millions, the NFL seeks to show that the sport can be a vehicle for solidarity, respect, and social awareness-beyond what happens on the field.
