The most embarrassing baseball play of 2025 is courtesy of a Miami Marlins outfielder

The Miami Marlins iniatilly looked at the 2025 regular season as a rebuilding moment for the franchise whose last World Series championship was 22 years ago, in the magical 2003 season.

And in many ways, this MLB year has been just that for the Florida team. They are currently third on the National League East with a 59.-65 record, 12 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. So there’s little to no chance that they make the playoffs as first place on their Division.

However, there’s a slim chance that the Marlins can make it to the postseason: the NL Wild Card race, which is currently lead by the Chicago Cubs, followed by the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets. However, there’s still a little hope for the Miami team.

The most embarrassing baseball play of 2025

At legendary Fenway Park, the Miami Marlins center fielder Dane Myers lived through what many are calling the most embarrassing baseball play of 2025 this Sunday. With two outs in the fourth and Miami leading 1-0, Boston’s Wilyer Abreu launched one to deep center.

Myers tracked it perfectly and for a moment looked like a hero, glove raised at the wall. But contact with the padding jarred the ball loose, turning a near highlight into a two run homer and a total dissapointment for his team.

As Red Sox fans exploded in celebration, Myers sat down against the wall, furious and defeated. What could have been the catch of the day became a viral blunder. And for a player already struggling at the plate since mid June, this mistake only deepened his nightmare season.

Some redemption for Myers at the end

But like all good stories, particularly in professional sports, it was Dane Myers‘ shot at redemption five innings later after his viral mistake. Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Miami wouldn’t need to face closer Aroldis Chapman, who was unavailable in the series finale after being forced to enter Saturday night’s game due to a Marlins rally that fell short

“It played a big part,” manager Clayton McCullough said. “And it’s something that even early in the season, we were celebrating some of those type of victories within a game, that over the course of the season, if you have the opportunity to force the opposition to bring in some leverage arms in a game late where they don’t particularly want to, it pays dividends, particularly the next day, or whoever they have to go play next.”

The Marlins capitalized, as Myers led off the frame with a game-tying homer, lining righty Greg Weissert‘s hanging slider over the right-center wall. Dane’s sixth home run of the season was his first since July 26. Considering Myers’ luck of late, he wasn’t certain the ball would get out as center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela ran toward it
