The NFL 2025 season began in a way that only few fans anticipated for the Kansas City Chiefs. After years of dominance and a recent Super Bowl win just two seasons ago under their belt, the team is currently going through an early season setback.
For one of the most decorated quarterbacks in the league, Patrick Mahomes, the statistics have been unkindly brutal. He starts the season with an overall 0-2 for the first time since his sophomore year of high school football.
A rough start
The Chiefs’ initial games showed big troubles and weaknesses in defense and offense. A close 20-17 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, then a 33-16 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks and an also close 29-27 defeat to the Chicago Bears made their preseason deplorable.
However, nothing has changed since the beginning of the NFL season, where they have suffered a 27-21 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 followed by a 20-17 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, becoming one of the worst stats in the Chiefs’ modern history record.
The statistic that blinds
Though issues on the team are multifaceted, one statistic illuminates with crystal clearness: Mahomes’ total interceptions. According to ‘Bleacher Report‘,during this new season season, Mahomes has nine interceptions and is tied for the NFL lead. His 4.0% rate is nearing twice his career rate of 1.9%, a statistic that highlights how surprising this fall is for a quarterback of his quality.
For a player known by his strict composure, eyesight, and playmaking prowess, these turnovers are especially wierd. Each of these interceptions not only created offense drives but turned the game momentum into ones that could have well had different endings.
Kansas City in flux
The Chiefs’ problems go beyond than just their quarterback. Offense line problems, streaky defense, and breakdowns on defense have all been factors in the team’s bumpy start. In this kind of environment, even superstars such as Mahomes cannot put their game plan into action.
Following this poor start, Mahomes’ career has been defined by resilience. Leadership, experience, and adaptability remain key weapons in the Chiefs’ arsenal, and his coaches and teammates are also working to balance the offense and reduce turnovers, allowing Mahomes to try get back into his rhythm.
As the season keeps going, this early-season reality is a tough lesson for everyone watching: even great quarterbacks are susceptible when a whole team does not quite measure up. History does teach us that with talent and resolve, accompanied by team effort, Mahomes can get the Chiefs out of this situation.
The path will obviously not be easy, but if there is one player who can drive through adversity, that is the one and only Patrick Mahomes.
