The money pours in on Jake Paul as betting market goes wild against Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul represent opposite ends of the modern boxing spectrum, yet their sanctioned heavyweight clash in Miami has produced one of the most surprising betting stories of the year.

On paper, the matchup looks wildly unbalanced. Joshua is a two time heavyweight champion, an Olympic gold medalist and a proven knockout artist who stands 6ft 6 and weighs 243 pounds.

Paul, by contrast, is a 6ft 1 tall social media star weighing 216 pounds, whose résumé at heavyweight includes a bout against a 58 year old opponent.

Despite that gulf in experience, the betting public has thrown its weight firmly behind Paul.

According to DraftKings, Paul entered fight week as a 7 to 1 underdog but attracted 82 percent of all bets and 90 percent of the total money wagered on the winner.

The sportsbook said that if Paul were to pull off the upset, it would face losses approaching $100 million.

Joshua, meanwhile, opened as a -1200 favorite, a price that requires bettors to risk $1,200 just to win $100. That kind of number has discouraged casual gamblers, even as overall interest in the bout has surged.

The imbalance has turned the fight into one of the most heavily bet boxing events of the year, despite the lopsided odds.

Sportsbooks have reported strong volume driven largely by fans backing Paul, a trend that has followed him throughout his crossover boxing career.

Why bettors keep backing Jake Paul

Industry figures say the phenomenon has less to do with technical boxing analysis and more to do with Paul‘s unique appeal.

Brandon Yaeger, who oversees combat sports for Caesars Sportsbook, said interest in the fight has already eclipsed some of Paul‘s previous bouts, even if the overall handle may not reach the heights of his spectacle driven clash with Mike Tyson.

“Betting interest is definitely high,” Yaeger told ESPN. “The handle has already passed the last fight between Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr..

“So far, the largest bet has been $90,000 to win $10,000 on Joshua.”

While most individual bets have landed on Paul, the largest wagers have tended to favor Joshua, suggesting sharper bettors are reluctant to fade an elite heavyweight at such a steep discount.

Why is Jake Paul popular?

At Hard Rock Bet in Florida, the story has been similar. Neil Walsh, the sportsbook’s senior vice president, described a wave of support for the underdog from local bettors.

“Florida loves Jake Paul, it’s really as simple as that,” Walsh said. “We are seeing one way action here, not unexpectedly.”

Analysts from outlets like The Athletic and BoxingScene have noted that Paul‘s fan base often treats his fights as entertainment investments rather than pure sporting propositions.

Small bets on a massive upset offer emotional payoff, social media bragging rights and the chance to be part of a viral moment.

Joshua, by contrast, represents the establishment. He is widely expected to win, but certainty rarely excites bettors when the payout is minimal.

As legalized sports betting continues to expand, this fight has become a case study in how popularity, personality and narrative can outweigh credentials at the betting window, even in a sport as unforgiving as heavyweight boxing.
