The misogynistic remark by a coach that unleashes outrage among football’s elite

Female power today is enormous. Women’s contribution to society is substantial and undeniable. They have achieved what their predecessors fought for over many years, breaking barriers that once seemed immovable.

Now, the responsibility falls on them to continue proving that they possess the same capabilities as men in every field, including sport, where their presence and influence grow stronger with each passing year.

Soccer has experienced remarkable growth among women, and it is now common to see girls discovering the joy of the ball from a very young age, developing into outstanding representatives of the game. Domestic leagues around the world have expanded rapidly, and international tournaments have followed the same path, with Women’s World Cups capturing global attention and redefining expectations regarding quality, competitiveness, and spectacle.

One of the countries where this growth has been particularly striking is France. There, the sport has reached levels that once seemed unimaginable, thanks to the high standard consistently displayed on the pitch. French teams have become a global reference point, with their domestic league standing as one of the benchmarks of European soccer. Within that landscape, Olympique de Lyon has established itself as one of the most successful and respected clubs on the continent.

The caveman-like statements of a French coach about women’s football

There are still figures who fail to understand the current direction of the world and appear to remain trapped in a prehistoric mindset. Such is the case of Guy Roux, a former AJ Auxerre coach, who has openly positioned himself against the advancement of women in sport.

In a recent interview with the magazine L’Est Éclair, Roux expressed clear discomfort with women’s football and the progress it has made over the years, delivering remarks that immediately sparked widespread criticism.

Women are made to give birth, with wider hips. And football isn’t made for wide hips. I have a lot of respect for these young women who play their favorite sport.”… “If you ask me if women’s matches are spectacular, I refer you to the First Division matches, which are played in front of 800 spectators.

Guy Roux

A story of regrettable statements by Guy Roux

This is not the first time Guy Roux has delivered such comments. In the past, he has repeatedly been surrounded by controversy due to similar statements that many consider offensive and outdated.

Do you want me to make a bold comparison? It looks like a women’s football match.

Guy Roux

He made that remark some time ago during a tribute held in honor of Djibril Cissé, once again drawing attention for the wrong reasons.

More controversy surrounding women playing football in France; this time it was Diego Bravo

Roux is not the only figure who has expressed himself poorly about women involved in football. Daniel Bravo, a BeIN Sports commentator, also made remarks related to women and the sport, though not in appropriate terms.

During a match between Paris FC and Olympique de Marseille, Bravo made a comment about Gaëtane Thiney that resulted in his suspension, as the statement was widely condemned for its absurdity.

She’s not paying much attention; she must be talking about lingerie…

Diego Bravo

At times, it seems as though society is still coexisting with individuals who believe women exist solely to give birth and serve men. The world has changed for the better, and that progress is largely thanks to the contributions of countless women who dreamed of equality and have now turned that vision into reality.
