Despite their big-name signings, the New York Mets fell short in their MLB campaign and are now preparing to part ways with one of their pitchers to make some changes. Failing to even reach the postseason was a real disappointment for the Queens team, who were eliminated from the league by the Miami Marlins.
The New York Mets are expected to be busy this winter after a disappointing end to the 2015 season, in which they failed to qualify for the postseason despite having the best record in baseball in June. While there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the players the Mets could add to their roster, for now, the focus is more on who they’re going to trade.
Kodai Senga to leave the New York Mets
Right-hander Kodai Senga is “extremely available,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Tuesday, adding that several Mets executives anticipate the 32-year-old will be traded this offseason. While Senga – who has two years remaining on his five-year, $75 million contract – has impressed when healthy, injuries have hampered his performance.
After a dazzling rookie campaign in 2023, in which he was selected to the All-Star team and posted a 2.98 ERA with 202 strikeouts in 29 starts, he made only one regular-season appearance in 2024. Senga suffered a shoulder injury during spring training that year, and when he made his season debut on July 26, he strained his calf while leaving the mound during a pop-up.
The Mets will release Frankie Montas
Another player leaving the Mets is Frankie Montas. It was announced Tuesday that the Mets designated Montas for assignment and officially granted him an unconditional release, ending what was a disastrous run for the right-handed pitcher in Queens. New York signed Montas to a two-year, $34 million contract in December 2024 with an opt-out after the 2025 season.
This decision at the time was considered somewhat risky, given Montas’ troubled injury history, which included missing almost the entire 2023 campaign. Those injury concerns materialized in February when it was announced that the 32-year-old would miss the start of the regular season after suffering a high-grade latissimus dorsi strain, which would sideline him for six to eight weeks.
