The Mets get a warning on Edwin Díaz and what they must do to maximize Devin Williams

The New York Mets just made a move that could elevate them to serious World Series contender status for next season. The team recently signed Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million deal, but this addition alone might not be enough to send a clear message to the rest of the league that they’re truly ready to compete at the highest level.

That’s why Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic believes the Mets shouldn’t stop there and should go after one more high-impact arm to bolster their bullpen.

Edwin Díaz remains the priority

The closer who spent the last six years with the Mets, Edwin Díaz, is now a free agent and is currently the most coveted reliever on the market. This is exactly where Rosenthal urges the team to bring back their former pitcher so the bullpen can operate at full throttle.

“Good move, but you still need Edwin Díaz at the back end of that bullpen if you’re building a truly elite one,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory. “If you have Devin Williams as your closer, you’d better build a strong group in front of him-which they could still do anyway. But I’d love this whole thing if it’s Williams setting up for Díaz.”

“As a setup man for Edwin Díaz, that combination is what a championship team would want, and it could become truly special,” he added.

Williams has racked up 86 saves over seven big-league seasons, with at least 14 in each year since 2022. But imagine the former Yankees reliever (note: Williams actually played for the Brewers, not Yankees) handling the eighth inning before handing the ball to Edwin Díaz-the Mets would instantly have one of the most fearsome closing duos in baseball.

In his six seasons with the Mets, Díaz recorded 144 saves, a 2.93 ERA, and an outstanding 538/118 K/BB ratio. In 2025 he put together an exceptional campaign: a 1.63 ERA, a 98/21 K/BB ratio in 62 appearances, and his third All-Star selection.

The battle for the top closer will be fierce, but with Williams already in the fold, the Mets now have a real chance to assemble a terrifying super-bullpen.
