The Mets bolster their bullpen with the arrival of veteran Luis Garcia

The New York Mets continue to move in the market to strengthen their pitching staff and on Monday closed the signing of right-handed pitcher Luis Garcia, an experienced addition to a bullpen that underwent major changes ahead of the upcoming MLB season.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Garcia signed a $1.75 million contract, with the possibility of adding $1.25 million in incentives, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Edwin Diaz’s injury forces Mets to reorganize bullpen

Garcia’s arrival comes at a time of transition for the Mets’ bullpen, following the departure of closer Edwin Diaz, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the wake of this loss, the New York organization decided to reinforce its depth with experienced arms.

The role of closer will fall to Devin Williams, former closer for the Milwaukee Brewers, while Luke Weaver, with recent past in the New York Yankees, aims to become the main setup man in the eighth inning. In this scheme, Garcia appears as a key piece to provide stability and experience in pressure situations.

Luis Garcia brings experience and track record in MLB

Luis Garcia is not a new name in MLB. The right-hander debuted in 2013 and has 13 seasons in the major leagues, playing for eight different franchises. Throughout his career he has played 603 games, with a 4.07 ERA and a 547-to-257 strikeout-to-walk ratio, numbers that reflect consistency over time.

His extensive track record makes him a reliable option for a bullpen that will look to hold leads and cover multiple innings when needed.

Garcia’s performance in 2025 justifies his signing

During the 2025 season, Garcia was one of the most itinerant relievers in the league. He began the year with the Dodgers, then moved to the Washington Nationals and finished the campaign with the Los Angeles Angels. Despite the constant changes of team, he maintained a solid performance.

In 58 appearances, the pitcher posted a 3.42 ERA, with 48 strikeouts and 26 walks, figures that convinced the Mets to add his arm to the project.

The Mets trust Garcia as a piece of the bullpen rotation

While Garcia does not arrive with the star status of Williams or Weaver, his role will be fundamental in the New York bullpen rotation. The front office is hoping that his experience will help balance a bullpen that looks to be competitive in a season where expectations are once again high.

A strong campaign would not only benefit the Mets in their sporting objective, but also allow Garcia to maximise the incentives in his contract and establish himself as a reliable reliever in one of the most demanding franchises in MLB.
