The Mets and the fear of losing Freddy Peralta in free agency next offseason

One of the signings the Mets were able to make in the offseason was Freddy Peralta, who arrived in a trade from the Brewers. Prior to the start of the campaign, there is one issue that causes doubts in him: his contract period. It is said that he will only be there for one year

Rumors of a possible contract extension circulated after the trade, but nothing has happened so far. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, it is “highly unlikely” that this possibility will come to fruition.

Free agency, Freddy Peralta’s priority

The Dominican pitcher will be able to become a free agent after the 2026 season. He has been one of the best pitchers in MLB in recent years, so he will surely demand a lucrative contract next offseason

The Mets leave the door open for a possible reunion, but the player will seek to get what he is looking for with another team in the next winter market. That would mean that the New York organization would only have him for one season after the trade, although they will try to negotiate with him when the time comes.

Freddy Peralta’s profile heading into free agency

He is a two-time All-Star and is coming off one of his best seasons in Major League Baseball. In the 2025 campaign, Peralta earned his second career All-Star selection and finished fifth in the National League Cy Young voting with the Brewers.

  • He made 33 starts
  • He posted a 2.70 ERA
  • He struck out 204 batters.

He has made at least 30 starts in each of the last three seasons, and his 33 starts in 2025 represented a career high. In addition, he has recorded at least 200 strikeouts in each of the last three years.

He is a caliber starting pitcher who will go out every five days and give his team a chance to win. Peralta usually gets a good number of strikeouts in his appearances and will keep his team in games even when he is not at his best on the mound.
