Everything seems to indicate that, within the Los Angeles Lakers organization, what was said when Luka Doncic arrived in the purple and gold lineup is proving to be true: the team would gradually be built around the Slovenian star.
That vision now appears to be taking shape. Rumors suggest that LeBron James is experiencing his final season with the franchise, which is why the team is preparing to reinforce the roster, particularly on the defensive end, where they have struggled enormously.
For that reason, they have already set their sights on a key player from their historic rival, the Golden State Warriors. Moreover, his potential arrival would not represent a significant financial burden, which further increases the likelihood that the Lakers could lure away this valuable piece.
DeAnthony Melton emerges as a strong target for the Lakers
When free agency arrives, Melton will undoubtedly be a key player for the Lakers to consider. He is an athlete who handles himself very well on the perimeter while also proving efficient with his shooting.
Although this season has not been Melton’s best, he could very well be the missing piece the Lakers need to complete their puzzle.
The current Warriors player holds a $3.4 million player option for next season. So far, he has continued signing short-term deals year after year; however, salary cap constraints could ultimately push him out of the Bay Area.
At the same time, all indications suggest that the player wishes to remain in California while also finding a competitive team, something the Warriors have struggled to be this season due to multiple injuries to key players.
He could fit perfectly alongside Luka Doncic, forming an ideal complementary partnership. The only remaining question is what the front office ultimately decides.
