The Lakers are stressed because they could lose Luka Doncic sooner than they think

The Los Angeles Lakers are facing significant pressure as the deadline for Luka Doncic’s contract extension nears. Since joining the Lakers in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks, Doncic has quickly become one of the most promising players for the team’s future.

However, with the extension deadline approaching on August 2, 2025, the Lakers are feeling the strain to secure his long-term commitment. The situation is made more complicated by various factors, including Doncic’s current international commitments and internal team dynamics.

Doncic, a two-time All-NBA First Team player, is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the NBA. In the 2024-2025 season, he averaged an impressive 28.2 points, 7.7 assists, and 8.2 rebounds per game. His performance helped elevate the Lakers to the third seed in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Despite a first-round playoff exit, his potential to lead the team back to championship contention is undeniable. This makes his contract extension all the more crucial for the Lakers, who are hoping to build around him for years to come.

However, due to the trade from the Mavericks, Doncic is no longer eligible for a supermax contract, which would have guaranteed him a substantial salary increase. Nonetheless, he is still in line to negotiate a significant extension.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Doncic could sign a three-year deal worth approximately $165 million, with a player option for the 2028-2029 season. This contract would keep him with the Lakers through his 10th NBA season and would make him supermax-eligible after that, allowing him to sign a more lucrative contract in the future.

The impact of EuroBasket and timing issues

Adding complexity to the situation is Doncic’s current participation in the EuroBasket tournament. His involvement with the Slovenian national team could extend into late September, depending on how far his team advances.

Historically, Doncic has avoided engaging in NBA contract negotiations while competing in international tournaments, meaning the Lakers may have to wait until after EuroBasket concludes to begin serious discussions. This delay could create a sense of urgency as the deadline approaches.

Moreover, there is internal tension within the Lakers, with LeBron James’ future with the team also in question. James, who exercised a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-2026 season, has expressed frustration with his diminishing role in the team’s long-term plans.

Reports suggest that James wasn’t consulted about key decisions, such as the acquisition of Doncic and the potential sale of the franchise. This has led to speculation that the upcoming season could be James’ last in Los Angeles, adding another layer of uncertainty for the Lakers.

As the August 2 deadline draws nearer, the Lakers face a pivotal moment in their franchise’s future. Securing Doncic’s commitment is critical if the team hopes to return to championship contention. However, with international commitments and internal team issues complicating matters, the next few weeks will determine not only Doncic’s future but also the trajectory of the Los Angeles Lakers.
