When the next NFL season kicks off, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs will aim to take revenge after what happened in Super Bowl LIX, while also striving to continue a dynasty that many experts believe has already ended.
The truth is, the Chiefs have a top-tier quarterback in Mahomes and Andy Reid as their head coach, so all they need is to convince their detractors that they are far from finished.
Are the Kansas City Chiefs Done?
An NFL expert has commented that despite having the fifth-best roster in the NFL and one of the best defenses in the league, the Chiefs lack elite talent in key areas.
“I think the Chiefs, this is definitely the worst roster they’ve been dealing with for a while,” said Sam Monson of The 33rd Team on Monday’s edition of the Drop the Mic podcast. “And even in the past, I think a lot of these great Chiefs teams, the roster hasn’t been that great for a lot of it. It’s been like they’re great in the right places.
“Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, back when he was cooking, they made a point of being good where you need to be good. And so, I think they always got credit for having this amazing roster, but a lot of the times it wasn’t that great.”
Monson mentions that for the Chiefs to be truly competitive, they need results similar to those from the 2022 NFL Draft. Kansas City selected offensive tackle Josh Simmons in the first round, defensive tackle Omar Norman-Lott in the second, edge rusher Ashton Gillotte and cornerback Nohl Williams in the third, wide receiver Jalen Royals in the fourth, linebacker Jeffrey Bassa in the fifth, and running back Brashard Smith in the seventh round.
“I think it was a great draft class,” Monson said, “but it actually kind of needs to be quite good because they’re relying on a lot of those players to patch up some of the holes in the roster that they’ve allowed.”
The Kansas City Chiefs know a thing or two about talent in the NFL, and they understand that it doesn’t always translate to wins. If they lacked potential, they wouldn’t have finished the last season with an impressive 15-2 record, reaching the Super Bowl. Now, they just need to prove they’re the same team-but even better.
