A seismic shift could be coming to the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Multiple reports suggest the Chiefs are preparing to announce plans to leave Arrowhead Stadium for a new domed stadium on the Kansas side of the state line, a move that would end more than five decades at one of the NFL’s most iconic venues.
Rumors came late Thursday, December 18th, and into Friday, December 19th, when Kansas City sports radio host Soren Petro posted on X that a key meeting is scheduled in Topeka on Monday to finalize the decision.
Barring a last minute ‘screw up by someone at the top’ announcing the Chiefs are moving to Kansas will happen after that meeting.

If confirmed, the announcement would reshape the franchise’s long-term future and the regional sports landscape.
Kansas officials confirm active stadium discussions
Speculation intensified when the Kansas Department of Commerce addressed the conversation publicly:
The state of Kansas is in active discussions with the Kansas City Chiefs about the prospects of building a new stadium and other facilities in Kansas,”
The department posted.
The statement emphasized that no final decision has been reached, but went on to call the potential move a “massive economic win” that would “benefit Kansans for generations to come.”
A new state-of-the-art domed stadium is expected to cost around $3 billion, compared to roughly $1 billion to renovate Arrowhead. If a deal is completed, the Chiefs would likely remain at Arrowhead through the end of their lease in 2031, meaning fans still have a few more seasons at the historic venue.
The Kansas City Royals, who currently share the Truman Sports Complex campus, are reportedly not part of Monday’s meeting, indicating the two franchises may no longer be stadium neighbors in the future.
A championship NFL landmark
Arrowhead Stadium is widely regarded as one of the loudest and craziest environments in football. For many fans, the idea of leaving feels unimaginable.
The venue has housed the Chiefs’ modern dynasty, including three Super Bowl victories in five appearances, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Arrowhead also became a pop-culture landmark when Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift went public with their relationship during a game in September 2023.
But winter weather remains a major obstacle for hosting major postseason events. A domed facility in Kansas could open the door for future Super Bowls, NCAA championships, concerts, and revenue-boosting events.
The timing, however, is not the best for a great announcement. The Chiefs’ 6-8 record has eliminated them from the postseason, Mahomes suffered a season-ending ACL tear, and Kelce is widely expected to retire following the 2025 season. For many, the potential move adds to the emotional weight surrounding a franchise entering a new era.
If Monday’s meeting confirms the relocation plans, Kansas City fans may soon begin preparing to say goodbye to one of football’s most legendary stadiums and hello to a multibillion-dollar modern new home.
