Heading into Caitlin Clark‘s second year with the team and the start of the WNBA season, the Indiana Fever already have a plan to tackle new beginnings.
The signing of Clark last year was a great help for the team, achieving great accomplishments that ended up leading her to the title of Rookie of the Year 2024. However and after a 20-20 record and a first round playoff exit, Indiana is looking to rebound and go further this time around. How will they pull off a turnaround?
The Indiana Fever’s strategic plan
Their previous coach, Christie Sides, didn’t do too badly. But, given the success and renown they achieved, the Fever could afford to look for a star to lead them. And that they did: Stephanie White, former Fever head coach in 2014, will be at the helm. And she comes with a strong backing as she led the Sun in 2023 and was named the league’s Coach of the Year that season.
With the coaching position settled, eyes turned to the team: they re-signed Kelsey Mitchell and brought in experienced Natasha Howard, DeWanna Bonner and Sydney Colson. Sophie Cunningham also joined the team as part of a trade, and they signed center Brianna Turner. This will give Clark’s team some much needed veteran experience and some much talent.
During the previous season, the Indiana Fever did a great job of keeping all the pressure of the team’s success off Caitlin Clark. But this year, the goal is for them to make the WNBA playoffs, win a series and finish the season with a better record than the previous season.
A strong performance in 2025 would certainly contribute to a next step. In the upcoming off-season, the goal will be to solidify a long-term roster. But given that most of the players will be free agents, Indiana could attract big names and thus work to increase their chances of winning the title to a higher percentage. Will they succeed?
