The incredible stat that shows how the Lakers run into a brick wall as Pistons expose defensive cracks

The Los Angeles Lakers were outclassed from start to finish on Tuesday night, falling 128-106 to the Detroit Pistons in a loss that quickly stripped away any illusion of a competitive battle.

Facing the Eastern Conference’s top seed, the Lakers hoped to stay within striking distance. Instead, they were physically overwhelmed and left chasing a game that never tilted back in their favor.

Detroit set the tone early with constant pressure at the rim and a defensive edge that rattled Los Angeles.

The Pistons dictated where shots came from and how possessions ended, forcing the Lakers into uncomfortable looks while feasting inside at the other end. One statistic from the night captured the imbalance perfectly.

“The Detroit Pistons MADE more shots in the paint tonight (37) than the Lakers attempted (34),” Law Murray wrote for The Athletic.

Detroit finished with 74 points in the paint, attacking the Lakers‘ interior over and over. Meanwhile, The Pistons‘ defense was just as punishing.

Their physical approach disrupted spacing, closed off driving lanes, and turned the Lakers into a jump shooting team. A short Lakers push in the third quarter was quickly erased by a Detroit run that restored control and drained any remaining momentum.

Paint dominance defines a one-sided night

Offensively, the Lakers leaned heavily on Luka Doncic, who finished with 30 points and 11 assists. He created shots through sheer skill and vision, but the lack of stops on the other end made it nearly impossible for his effort to change the direction of the game.

LeBron James, playing on his 41st birthday, scored 17 points. His presence still commands attention, but the game underscored how thin the Lakers‘ margin becomes when defensive execution slips. Jaxson Hayes chipped in 13 points, though Los Angeles never found a way to protect the rim consistently.

Detroit, meanwhile, looked comfortable and in control. Cade Cunningham orchestrated the offense with 27 points and 11 assists, posting a team high plus 23 in just 27 minutes. His ability to collapse the defense created open looks and kept the Lakers scrambling.

Jalen Duren anchored the Pistons‘ interior presence, finishing with 14 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. His activity around the basket set the tone defensively and helped fuel Detroit’s transition game.
