The relevance of Shohei Ohtani in Major League Baseball is undeniable, and his dominance of the game makes fans delighted with his presence in what is considered the best baseball on the planet, that of MLB’s ‘Big Top’.

The Japanese sensation has broken all records and established a hegemony that will be difficult to break for many years, and proof of this is also the sensation it represents in marketing terms, as everything to do with him, whether it’s a bobblehead, a product he advertises or any piece of memorabilia acquires value, especially if it’s accompanied by some milestone achieved on the field.

This is the case of a jersey that the Japanese baseball player wore with theLos Angeles Dodgers last season, on April 26, 2024 in the visit of the Dodgers to Toronto’s Rogers Centre in a game against the Blue Jays, in which he set the record for most home runs by a Japanese player on the team.

Why did the T-shirt reach that price?

Japanese site Biz.chosun.com reported that the jersey Ohtani wore that day and gave away and autographed to a fan was put up for sale at the Japanese collectible card specialty mall Mint Daimaru for 100 million yen, the equivalent of $700,000!

The gray garment, which instead of the word ‘Dodgers’ had the words ‘Los Angeles’ on the front, incorporates on the number on the back the inscriptions in white ink of Shohei Ohtani’s signature in Japanese and the initials HR#7, which represent the seventh home run that the player hit that day with the Los Angeles team.

An excessive price?

Of course, no one denies that this is a historic jersey, but the Japanese player’s achievements with the Dodgers accumulated after that day, and some of much greater importance, so for that very reason it is considered that the value of this piece is disproportionate, since there is a risk that idolatry will enter the equation and anything that Ohtani has touched will be sold in stratospheric amounts, just like this jersey.
