The incredible amount being paid to watch (standing up!) Game 2 of the World Series at Rogers Centre

Excitement is running high in Toronto after the Blue Jays’ first victory over the Dodgers in the World Series opener. The Canadian franchise’s thrashing in the first game has multiplied the optimism of fans, who dream of winning an MLB title again after 32 years of drought.

And with expectations also soaring, so have ticket prices at Rogers Centre, where on Saturday the cheapest ticket to get into the second Fall Classic showdown will cost more than $1,000 and won’t even guarantee a seat.

According to the platform Gametime, the cheapest ticket is $1,110 in the highest part of the stands behind home plate. The curious detail is that this ticket only gives access to a space to stand, so whoever pays that amount will not be able to sit throughout the game.

Most seats range from $1,200 to $4,350, although there are others that exceed $10,000 in a privileged area behind the plate and very close to the field

These figures represent a considerable increase from the first day of the World Series, when the cheapest ticket (also standing room only) was $613. Before that opening game there was a significant drop in prices, but the Blue Jays’ victory has driven up demand and also costs.

On the Ticketmaster platform, the cheapest resale ticket is CAD $1,684 (USD $1,202), while the best seats can cost more than CAD $8,500 (USD $6,120).

The difference with 1993

It’s been 32 years since the last World Series the Blue Jays played in. You have to go back to 1993 to find the closest reference to a Toronto title. Many things have changed in that time, including the price of tickets, as illustrated by a recent report by CTV News.

The network spoke to several fans who attended the 1993 games, who revealed that tickets at the time could be around $80. This represents an increase of almost 1,500% in ticket prices.
