The reality show “The Golden Bachelor” is set to return for a second season, with ABC announcing that it will star Mel Owens, a former NFL player who at 66 is ready to find love.
After being selected in the 1981 NFL Draft and playing for the Los Angeles Rams, Owens studied law and is now an attorney in Orange County, California.
“Sharing in the general pleasures of the relationship, sharing in the daily moments of life, making plans for the future and growing strongly together,” ABC said in a statement about the season 2 announcement of “The Golden Bachelor.”
Owens’ time in the NFL
After being the ninth overall pick in the 1981 Draft, Owens played linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams until 1989 and in an interview with the South Florida Tribune he recalled that he was part of a stage before television contracts skyrocketed.
“I played with a lot of great players, I had a great time. We built the NFL to where it is now. It was just before the TV contracts skyrocketed in the early 90s,” Owens recalled in 2024.
According to ABC, after retiring from the NFL, Owens went into law with a mission to help others, particularly those seeking justice for sports-related injuries.
How did Owens get to “The Golden Bachelor”?
In his personal life, ABC highlighted that Owens was married for 25 years to “his first love,” while according to People, the new star of “The Golden Bachelor”, shared at the Disney Get Real event that “company” is what he misses most about being married.
His arrival on the show came as a suggestion from the younger of his two sons: “We were watching the regular Bachelor show. He said, ‘Yeah, Dad, you should be the bachelor,'” Owens commented, before adding: “The Golden Bachelor ad came out. He said, ‘But you should be the real one.'”.
