The Giants make decision on Bill Belichick as their new head coach for 2026

The New York Giants entered the 2025 season hoping stability would finally take hold. Instead, the year unraveled quickly, ending with Brian Daboll’s dismissal and another reset for one of the NFL’s most tradition-rich franchises. As soon as the job came open, the speculation machine kicked into high gear.

At the center of it all was Bill Belichick. His departure from the NFL, followed by a brief and uneven stint at North Carolina, made the idea of a return feel realistic. For many around the league, New York looked like the most logical landing spot. History, market size, urgency. It all seemed to fit.

The noise only grew louder as the Giants began quietly mapping out their next move. Fans imagined a hard reset led by the most accomplished coach of the modern era. But behind the scenes, the front office was already moving in a different direction.

According to ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan, the Giants have now finalized an important part of their search. Belichick is not on their shortlist for the 2026 season. The organization has reportedly focused its efforts on candidates with more recent NFL experience, signaling a preference for continuity with today’s game rather than leaning on past success.

A new direction takes shape in New York

With Belichick out, the picture becomes clearer. Raanan reports that former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and former Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce, who once suited up for the Giants, are among the names under serious consideration. Because the season is still ongoing, they are the only two candidates the team can formally interview right now.

The Giants are also keeping a close eye on the AFC North. Kevin Stefanski, Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, and Zac Taylor have all drawn interest, with Stefanski viewed internally as the top target. While prying away a sitting head coach is difficult, it is not unheard of when the timing and circumstances align.

As for Belichick, his immediate NFL return looks unlikely. He remains with the UNC Tar Heels, where the program believes another year could help establish long-term stability despite a disappointing 2025 campaign. Several NFL teams are expected to make coaching changes ahead of 2026, but the Giants were widely seen as his best chance.

That window is now closed. New York has made its call, and the search moves forward without the most famous name on the board.
