The Game of Thrones actor who has challenged Jake Paul to a fight

In a twist more akin to an episode of Game of Thrones than reality, Hafthor Bjornsson, known worldwide for his role as ‘The Mountain’ in the acclaimed HBO series, has publicly challenged Jake Paul, the controversial and media-savvy YouTuber turned professional boxer. The news, which has shaken social media and boxing forums, marks the latest chapter in Paul’s career, characterised as much by spectacle as by blows.

The challenge came in the form of a brief but forceful post on X, where the Icelandic colossus wrote: “Jake Paul fighting small people. Should try to fight someone like me… we’ll see how it goes.” With just those words, Bjornsson threw a direct punch at the American’s ego, questioning the legitimacy of his previous opponents and challenging him to face an opponent who, in his own words, “plays in another league.”

A titan in the ring

For those who only know him for his imposing on-screen presence, it is worth remembering that Hafthor Bjornsson is not only an actor, but also one of the strongest men in the world. In 2020, he broke the world deadlift record by lifting 501 kilograms, surpassing the mark held by his British rival Eddie Hall. The two later faced off in a boxing match in 2022, which Bjornsson won by unanimous decision, proving that he also knows how to move around the ring.

Standing at 6ft 9in and weighing over 330lbs at his competitive peak, ‘The Mountain’ is an opponent who would physically overshadow Jake Paul (6ft 1in and around 187lbs), who has been repeatedly accused of choosing opponents who are below his weight class or with little experience in professional boxing.

The context of the challenge

The message from Bjornsson was no coincidence. It was published shortly after Jake Paul appeared at a press conference alongside professional boxer Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion. The image of Paul, noticeably larger than Davis, went viral and generated a wave of criticism for what many saw as yet another attempt to “sell smoke” rather than seek fair competition. Bjornsson, who does not usually get involved in media controversies, could not help but speak out.

So far, Jake Paul has not publicly responded to the challenge. While he is known for his quick reactions on social media, his silence has been interpreted by some as a sign of prudence, and by others as a lack of interest or even courage. A fight against Bjornsson would not only involve a huge size difference, but would also be a big risk in sporting and commercial terms.

From a logistical point of view, organizing such a fight would not be easy. For the fight not to be simply a circus sideshow, Bjornsson would have to lose considerable weight, which could compromise his strength and performance. On the other hand, Jake Paul would have to accept a fight outside his usual parameters, something he has not done so far in his professional career.
