The financial problems Travis Hunter will cause the Jacksonville Jaguars that the Browns avoided with Shedeur Sanders

While recent news about Travis Hunter has centered on his wedding and the controversy it may spark, another topic has emerged regarding his NFL earnings, confirming he’ll benefit from his ability to play on both sides of the ball.

There’s no doubt that the new Jacksonville Jaguars player is unique, and the way his compensation will be structured is equally distinctive.

Travis Hunter’s NFL Earnings

The first contract of the former Colorado Buffaloes star is valued at four years and $46.65 million, as stipulated by the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), with a fifth-year option at the team’s discretion.

Now, according to insider Dan Graziano, this two-way player, performing on both offense and defense, could tap into unprecedented revenue streams that may be historic.

This involves performance-based pay (PBP), positioning Hunter to earn more in this bonus category than any other player.

It’s estimated that the CB-WR will receive between $300,000 and $400,000, considered a record-breaking amount for the NFL.

Graziano provided the full context, noting that last year’s No. 2 pick, Jayden Daniels, earned over $177,000 in PBP.

“And remember,” Graziano wrote, “the Jaguars have no reason to limit Hunter’s snaps to avoid a higher performance-based payment; the PBP pool is set and equal for every team, and every team is required to spend it all.”

The next step would be to monitor what’s best for the team, as when negotiating a second contract, they’ll need to consider how to formalize it, given that a wide receiver doesn’t earn the same as a cornerback.

“So, if Hunter were to play, for example, 400 snaps at cornerback and 399 at wide receiver in 2027, his fifth-year option would be for the cornerback salary. The same thing goes if he had the same split in the final year of his contract and the Jaguars chose to franchise him.
